Located in historic Savannah, Hunter Army Airfield is a former Air
Force base that now houses the 3d Infantry Aviation Brigade, 1st
Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, 224th Military Intelligence Brigade and
Coast Guard Air Station Savannah.
Hunter Army Airfield, as well as Fort Stewart, is a US military Installation near Savannah, Georgia. It is residence to the 3rd Infantry Division of the US military. Until 1967 the installation and the Strategic Air Command (SAC) facility known as Hunter Air Force Base was located here. Butwas transferred to the U.S. Air Force for the U.S. Army in 1967.
Hunter's has a long 3467m runway which supports the installation 's deployment and distribution needs as all aircraft, including huge C-5 Galaxy, can land safely at Hunter. It also has a unique advantage of being identified as an alternative landing site for NASA 's space shuttle orbiters. In June 2007, the commander of the garrison Hunter Army Airfield is Lieutenant Colonel Daniel W Whitney. Currently, Hunter Army installation has roughly 5000 soldiers, airmen and coast guards working at the station. There are units of the 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart.
Coast Guard Air Station Savannah is also located on Hunter Army Base. It is the largest helicopter unit of the Coast Guard anywere in the US and savannah and coastal Georgia with the tour-clock search and rescue coverage of the region.
