In March of 2010, the President plans to invite leaders from about thirty countries to come discuss nuclear security issues at the white house. The meeting will be aimed at finding solutions to reducing weapons smuggling so that nations such as Iran cannot easily attain weapons or materials.
According to Mark Lippert, the Chief of Staff for the US Security Council, “nuclear terrorism is the most immediate and extreme threat to global security.” Lippert elaborated that the purpose of this summit is to reduce the amount of available nuclear materials to unstable nations.
Do you agree that this is the greatest threat towards global security at the moment? What else can compare to this threat? In my mind, the economy needs to be fixed as well to secure security for the United States. If our economy does not improve, we will be left behind China which would allow them to procure and develop more advanced weapons. That is a situation that we truly do not want to be left with. In short, I agree that we need to worry about nuclear security issues. However we cannot let this issue eclipse our economic crisis at hand. If we do not fix this issue, there could be a change in the power paradigm. And that is something that American’s truly do not want to see happen.
