North Korean Attack on South Unlikely

Written by Jonathan Formby

As tensions mount with North Korea, the commander for the US troops in South Korea issued some assurance of our defensive capabilities. He stated that he is “absolutely confident” that we can defend against any attack from North Korea. He continued, “I am absolutely confident that the capabilities that we and the Republic of Korea have are prepared for any threat.” Such threats include an attack in South Korea by North Korean troops, Cyber attacks, and missile threats.
It’s no wonder why people are beginning to worry about North Korea. During the past year, North Korea has tested an atomic bomb, completely cut itself off from denuclearization talks, made threats towards the US, and conducted aggressive missile tests.

Experts believe that an attack from North Korea is not likely in the coming months. Specifically if the North were to attack the South, it could be “destructive” but would undoubtedly be unsuccessful. Johnny Weida, the Major General for the US in South Korea, stated that Kim Jong-Il would likely resist attacking the South for fear of the ramifications of such an action.

I tend to agree with the sentiments of Johnny Weida. I believe that North Korea has been attempting to garner fear from the rest of the world without legitimate plans for using these deadly weapons. The moment that North Korea uses such weapons, they will face harsh consequences. It is my hope that they will see that and refrain from doing anything foolish.
