Recently Israel tested their new system which his designed to destroy incoming rockets. Such technology would be ideal for counteracting attacks from the Gaza strip. The system is known as the iron dome and is said to be capable of intercepting rockets from 2.5 miles to 44 miles away. The test of the new technology was a success although more tests are planned to ensure functionality of the system. One Israeli officer stated that they plan to use this system at the Southern border of Israel. The defense minister Ehud Barak stated, “This system is a new defense element against rockets and will allow the Israeli army to better carry out its supreme duty which is to protect, in the best way, our civilian population.”
Since Israel’s military action in Gaza concluded on January 18 2009, they have experienced over 200 rockets attacks. One of the greatest threats has been the unsophisticated Qassam rockets which are made and utilized by Palestinians.
Other history of serious rocket fire includes the summer of 2006 when Israel had over 400 rockets fired at the nation by the radical Hezbollah group.
This technology looks to be just the answer for Israel. I hope that they are able to utilize this technology in every way possible so that they can be protected from all of their many local enemies.
