US to Provide “Defense Umbrella”

Written by Jonathan Formby

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton recently spoke to assure allies of the United States that we would not let them be exposed to Iranian threats. Specifically she stated that the US will work with “crippling action” in order to ensure that other countries have suitable defense shields set up to prevent and protect against attacks from a dangerous Iran. Clinton reiterated that the US will continue to be open to talks with Iran. However she clarified that this does not mean we will sit idly in the mean time. Until Iran comes around, the US plans to build up defenses and help allies build defenses.

Clinton commented on what might happen if Iran continues to develop and procure weapons stating, “If the US extends a defense umbrella over the region, if we do even more to support the military capacity of those in the Gulf, it is unlikely Iran will be any stronger or safer.”

Do you agree with these comments made by Clinton? I certainly agree that we can do a great deal to minimize the threat of Iran by helping our allies build up suitable and capable shield systems. However I still am not ok with the idea of an armed Iran. It is likely that the nation will still attempt to use the weapons. My hope is that the shields will be strong enough and advanced enough to protect against any attacks from Iran.

Do you believe that these shields will act as a deterrence to Iran? Will they protect against an attack?
