While North Korea has continually refused to return to the table for international discussions concerning their nuclear program, they may be ready to meet with the United States. Experts say that during a meeting on Monday, North Korea suggested that they might be willing to discuss their nuclear program with America. When discussing their nuclear program the foreign minister of North Korea stated that they were open to a “specific and reserved form of dialogue.”
North Korea is strongly opposed to resuming the six party talks which consisted of the US , China, North and South Korea, Russia, and Japan. A foreign ministry spokesperson from North Korea stated, “Any attempt to side with those who claim the resumption of the six-party talks without grasping the essence of the matter will not help ease tension.”
While it may seem very positive that North Korea wants to discuss these issues with the US directly, experts say that the US has typically avoided such instances in favor of the six party discussions. However, at this point, I think it would be wise to discuss these issues with North Korea, even if the only nations involved are the US and North Korea. We have come to a point where we are running out of options. A stalemate has existed and North Korea may be offering a way out. We should at least meet with them to see what kind of compromise they are willing to make. A compromise with North Korea could be better than the alternative.
