The missile defense system located in Hawaii was tested on Friday and was met with perfect success according to military officials. The test was conducted in the midst of uncertain times with North Korea, as they continue to move towards more nuclear capabilities. In the test, a short range missile was fired and met with the USS Hopper missile interception system. The missile defense system completely neutralized the test missile. The defense agency stated that the missile defense system, “successfully guided the SM-3 (interceptor) to a direct body-to-body hit, approximately two minutes after leaving the ship.” Furthermore, “The intercept occurred about 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean.” So why is this missile defense system so important? If you remember, the rogue nation North Korea launched seven missiles into the Sea of Japan on the 4th of July in an effort to induce fear from the US and our allies. This missile defense system in Hawaii is precisely the technology the military would utilize in order to neutralize a ballistic missile threat from North Korea. The fact that we just had a perfectly successful test run should help ease the minds of those concerned about North Korea. The Aegis missile defense system has been tested 23 times with 19 successful tests. While that is certainly not a perfect percentage, it does illustrate that our missile defense systems are capable of neutralizing threats consistently. Does the Aegis missile defense system help ease your fears about North Korea, or is there still a great cause for concern?
