On Wednesday the US was ecstatic to see that the two journalists from North Korea were freed by the unstable Kim Jong Il. As the journalists came home, Obama made things slightly clearer about North Korea. He assured the people that relations with North Korea would improve. Obama stated, “We have said to the North Koreans there is a path for improved relations, and it involves them no longer developing nuclear weapons and not engaging in the provocative behavior they have been engaging in.” When I heard Obama say this, I was proud to hear it. It is about time that he call out North Korea for their ridiculous behavior.
Interestingly, many have commented on President Clintons trip to North Korea. Some experts believe that it was a concession to North Korea and an act of weakness. What do you make of such claims? My personal opinion is that it was an acceptable move. I hate to give anything to North Korea but as with everything, you have to pick and choose your battles. If North Korea’s leader wanted to see Clinton to cooperate, that isn’t so bad. I believe that we have to save our battles for the issues that really count, nuclear disarmament issues. And on those issues, we must be unwavering. We are approaching a time where the Obama administration is finally getting fed up with North Korea. I think they might finally be ready to demand some positive actions from North Korea.
