The more I think about the nuclear situation of our world, the more I feel these weapons are totally useless. Nuclear weapons are useless in a sense because they are never actually used. Granted I am very happy that these weapons are not used. I am only noting that the true purpose of these weapons is simply to intimidate opponents and to induce cooperation. It is a huge game of bluffing and making threats. I only wish that we could get rid of these costly weapons since they are never actually utilized, rather they are only used as a means to induce fear.
Take the case of North Korea. North Korea has been saying that they will fire a nuke for years. Yet the nation has never done so because they know that they will not see another day if they fire a nuke. It is the same case for every nation. No one is willing to use these weapons because there is so much potential for retaliation. Frankly when you go into that thought you start talking about the end of the world. This brings me to my last question: is there a way to get rid of these weapons altogether so we don’t have to worry about the world being annihilated? My honest answer is no. However our president seems to think that there is a legitimate possibility for total global denuclearization. I find that such a suggestion is probably the most dangerous concept of all. It is dangerous because if all the nations forfeit nukes, the first one to procure the weapons again will hold all the power and will be unchecked. At least now the system functions as a stalemate because everyone has nukes and knows that retaliation would be fatal.
