Recently North Korea decided to reduce ridiculous border restrictions which had previously been applied to people from South Korea. Apparently relations between North and South Korea are looking to improve. North Korea stated that they would ease up on border issues because relations between South Korea are improving. Additionally North Korea said that it was going to reopen a railroad which goes between both North and South Korea meaning improved means of trade and economic benefits for both parties and foreigners.
So what does all of this mean? I believe that North Korea is starting to realize that being the victim of sanctions is no fun. I believe that all of these moves with South Korea are in an effort to win over the nation which North Korea has so foolishly alienated. Finally there is some sense coming from North Korea, if things are as they seem. Is there any other reason why North Korea would be acting so friendly with South Korea? For years the North has done nothing but make things difficult for the South. Suddenly North Korea is repealing their previous actions which just doesn’t make sense unless they have finally realize that they need allies in this world.
Do you believe that North Korea will change? Will the North ever be a cooperative party for the United States? Or will there always be animosity and distrust between the two parties. I think that the best we can hope for is simply cooperation from North Korea. I think that hope for progress beyond basic compliance is simply wishful thinking.
