South Korea Develops New Torpedoes

Written by Jonathan Formby

The government of South Korea recently announced that they are developing anti sub missiles which will be functional from 2010 to 2012. These torpedoes which will be housed on ships specifically to take out submarines, are called red shark torpedoes. There will be up to seventy of these torpedoes developed in the hopes of building a more capable naval fleet for South Korea. These torpedoes have been in the making for nine years now and are finally functional, according to South Korean sources. Interestingly these torpedoes are launched into the air where they can fly for roughly twelve miles, then enter the water near the point of the submarine.

I have to say it makes me happy to see that South Korea is continuing to develop their military. South Korea needs an ample military more than most nations because of their close proximity to the rogue nation North Korea. South Korea has continually been a resourceful and helpful ally to the United States. Time and time again they have helped us handle issues with North Korea.

The red shark torpedoes are expected to cost 145 million dollars, a relatively cheap military investment. The torpedoes are 18-feet and precision guided.
