There is a tendency today to forget about our history. I notice a trend in most people especially student whereby even if they know the history of the United States remains just that, only history. There is no bigger picture connection to how history has shaped and impacted our lives today. It is for that reason that I wanted to remind everyone and get your thoughts on how the cold war shaped American military policy today. In general, the Cold War allowed the US to finally emerge as the dominant global military power. This means that we finally came out as a physical and economic powerhouse. Industry was developed because of continual need for new weapons during the cold war. Defense companies thrived because of the need for new weapons innovations and they have continued to thrive because one thing is for certain – you can’t stay on top if you don’t protect your thrown. In other words, the moment the US lets up on military developments, someone else will slip in to clench the position of global military and economic leader. Furthermore the cold war shaped our policy in dealing with other nations. We now have a general policy of distrust and we always insist on monitoring other nations to ensure that they will not become a danger to us or the global community. I don’t dislike this policy – I am only pointing it out for thought. Lastly the cold war created significant animosity between the US and other nations because of their jealousy for our global dominance.
