Iraq Still Troubled

Written by USPatriot

Iraq is continuing to fight with its neighbor Syria which is causing additional political problems for a nation with a new political system. Currently Iran is attempting to develop a political system based on democracy. The elections are scheduled for January but are sure to encounter more opposition from radical groups. Since the US began withdrawing from Iraq, the Prime Minister Nouri al-Malaki has called out Syria for allowing insurgents and former members of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party. Specifically Malaki blamed these insurgents in Syria for a series of suicide bombings which have taken 100 lives. From a political standpoint, these attacks have been detrimental to Malakis image and career. He wanted to maintain an image of control but instead was undermined and made to look like a fool who couldn’t stop the chaos.

What do you make of the situation in Iran since the US has withdrawn troops? Does this fledgling democracy stand a chance? The situation I just outlined is only one example of the serious unrest and struggle for power which exists in Iraq right now. It is my opinion that the struggle will continue for years to come as Sunni militants lash out at a government which they fundamentally hate. It is only my hope that the US presence in Iraq will not be in vain. I do believe that the US has set Iraq on a path for success. Granted these things such as democracy typically take time and generations to set up. However I believe that in fifty years Iraq will be a safer, more stable environment in large part because of the freedom that the United States secured for the people of Iraq from an oppressive government and leadership.
