Today I am playing devil’s advocate. I will offer an entirely different viewpoint than the one I expressed yesterday.
Here it goes . . .
Why do people hate Americans? They hate us because we are a cocky, arrogant nation who insists on bullying other countries to get what we want. Who is to say that our way of life is better than another nations way of life? Why is democracy the end all be all. Are we so vain that we can’t respect the traditions of another country? Granted Saddam was a tyrant and committed various acts which are hardly humanitarian. However he did embody the ideals of the region. I watched a news report a few months ago where a family in Iraq was interviewed about the US presence in their country. The family stated that they wished that there had been no invasion and that they were better off when Sadam was in charge.
The second area of argument is that the Iraqi people never asked for our help. Instead we invaded without invitation to disrupt the balance of the region. If democracy is the end all be all and the most productive, evolved form of government, it will likely take a nation such as Iraq several generations and even centuries to transition from a governmental system which has dominated the reason forever. The region has never embraced democracy and likely never will. It can easily be argued that the new democratic government is simply too weak and frail to survive.
There you have it . . . in the past couple days I have given a synopsis of the war in Iraq from both sides. Let me know which one you agree with and why. Maybe you subscribe to a non mainstream believe about the war or maybe you are somewhere in the middle. Whatever you think, feel free to comment on your thoughts.
