President Obama is continually losing favor with both the republican and democratic parties as the war in Afghanistan continues and he suggests sending more troops abroad.
Carl Levin, a renowned and influential democrat in Washington, spoke out against Obama’s continued efforts in Afghanistan amid Obama’s discussions of sending more troops abroad. Around the same time as Carl Levin spoke, officers at the Pentagon stated that they planned to send more troops to Afghanistan out of necessity. The Pentagon cited recent events which suggest that explosives are more prominent and dangerous than ever in Afghanistan. It appears that the region continues to be a hotbed for malicious activity and the Pentagon believes the only way to slow this activity is to bring in reinforcements.
Around this time, I would like to ask what you think about reinforcements to Afghanistan. Do you think that it is necessary at this point? Didn’t Obama promise to bring the troops home from overseas, not send more? My personal opinion is that national and global security is a primary concern. If intelligence legitimately suggests that additional troops will make a large difference and allow all troops to return to the US sooner, I am for the move. However I am slightly uncomfortable with the idea of occupying this region and policing the region for years to come. In my opinion, it is likely that we will be there for years to come. Is there really any other way to resolve this conflict than to keep soldiers in the region?
