Six Party Nuclear Talks with Iran

Written by Jonathan Formby

US officials stated that the US plans to confront Iran about their nuclear program next month during discussions with six other nations in Turkey. Finally Iran has agreed to meet with the US and our allies. The EU chief stated that the talks will probably be located in Turkey, a somewhat neutral nation in this conflict. These talks are long overdue as Iran has repeatedly denied that they are developing nuclear weapons. For months Iran has stated that they are only pursuing peaceful generation of nuclear power. However intelligence from across the globe has almost unanimously concluded that Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons through the process of Uranium Enrichment. That is why Iran having a nuclear program is so dangerous. Even with a peaceful nuclear program, it is a short step to begin enriching uranium for harmful purposes. If Iran were ever allowed to have a nuclear power program, which I believe to be a mistake, there would have to be some serious controls in place to ensure that they could not abuse those capabilities. One thing is for certain, Iran cannot be trusted with a nuclear weapon program.

A spokesperson from the White house, Robert Gibbs, spoke on the issue stating, “I don’t know what’s on their agenda (for the meeting), but I know what’s on our agenda and I know what’s on the agenda for countries around the world that are concerned about Iran’s illicit nuclear weapons program.”

Should the US and our allies take a hard line against Iran during these discussions? Is there a risk to coming off too strong? Could we ever allow an Iranian nuclear power program? Could that work without abuse from Iran?
