Yesterday I left off asking the question, “is it ok for the US to set up bases in other countries?” Specifically I was talking about setting up bases in other nations to cut off drug cartels at the source. Many activists in the United States believe that this is a waste of taxpayer dollars. They belive that the billions we spend to keep narcotics from coming into this county is a waste of taxpayer dollars. I have heard these people speak before. They often favor a much too literal interpretation of the consitution which goes something like this “America is a free country so if people want to buy drugs that is their problem.” I sternly disagree with this school of logic. However I can understand taxpayers setting a limit to the amount of funds that we shell out to keep drugs out of the country. It is an extremely expensive business to send forces to another nation such as Colombia where we are setting up shop now. This costs billions and billions of dollars. Is it really worth it?
International critics such as Hugo Chavez harshly rebuke the US for occcupying Columbia to stop the drug cartels. He is afraid that we are really there to invade Venezuela and take over the oil operations. Every time I think about this illogical paranoia, I have to say, “do you know who our President is?” Obama is not likely to engage in any more war than he absolutely has to. I think Chavez is safe for now.
I leave it to you. Should we be setting up anti drug operations in other countries in the midst of a harsh recession and less taxpayer dollars than ever? Is it ok to borrow money from China to finance anti drug operations? Where do we draw the line?
