I’m going to throw something out there that may not be received in the most positive manner. Is it possible that relations with China could negatively impact the United States? Let us not forget that China is a communist government with a culture and history which is quite opposite our own. In trading with China and in borrowing mass quantities of money from China to finance purchases, we are becoming more dependent on China each and every day. Is it possible that we could get in trouble if relations with China went South? In the event that this happens, our entire trade industry would suffer and we would face an incredible recession. Additionally I am fearful for any confrontation with China as they are continually building a more and more impressive military. While I am in no way suggesting that we should break off trade or relations with China, I am suggesting that we consider the consequences of having so many eggs in one basket.
Now to be fair, I must also remind the reader that China needs us too. Their economy would take a stern beating as well if they were to cut off trade with the US. However as recent economic situations have illustrated, the economy of China is stronger than that of the US and would rebound more quickly. Even now the Chinese economy is improving faster than the US.
My purpose in stating all of this is to induce some thinking on the parts of Americans. Chinese trade has allowed us to move to new heights in industry that we could not have accomplished otherwise. However with every new relationship or innovation, there are usually risks associated. I am only suggesting we think about the risks. Let me know what you think.
