What does the future hold with nuclear weapons for the nations of the world? Could there ever be a world with less weapons than we have right now? Historically does that even happen? It is my understanding that militaries and nations regularly evolve through history creating new weapons and spending more and more on weapons each and every year. However at some point one has to ask, where do we draw the line? How many billions of dollars more will be spent on nuclear weapons which will never be used? I am not saying that we shouldn’t keep developing our weapons, on the contrary I think we need to do so to maintain our competitive edge. However I am saying that perhaps the future will hold the possibility of global disarmament.
If nuclear disarmament were actually a possibility as Obama suggests, how would conflicts be settled? Diplomacy might be the first thing to come to mind. However diplomacy does not have a successful track record of mediating conflicts. War on the other hand always provides a clear cut result. I do not favor war but I do realize that war and the threat of war resolve those conflicts which are too messy and too complicated for simple diplomacy.
Perhaps in the past political leaders have not tried hard enough, maybe that is why diplomacy has failed. Well then to say that we will be able to operate solely on diplomacy in the future is to suggest that politicians will try even harder, which is doubtful. In short I am basically saying that nuclear disarmament would be nice but it is unrealistic.
