US Increases Iran Sanctions

Written by Jonathan Formby

On Wednesday the US House of Representatives approved measures to up the sanctions on Iran in order to get them to halt uranium enrichment. The new bill went through the House with a 414-6 vote indicating that such action is widely overdue. The bill punishes firms that do more than 20 million dollars worth of business within the energy sector of Iran. The Democratic House leader stated that he hopes these measures will show Iran that the window for negotiations and diplomacy will not remain open for ever. All I can say is that it is ABOUT TIME! The US has been pilling around for too long. We need to either up the ante or give in and satisfy the demands of Iran. I favor the former.

Do you believe that this new legislation will do any good? The sanction does not even directly hit Iran, as it is mostly impacting firms that do business there. Yes it will have some financial backlash but this is no great bold move on the part of the US. In my opinion it is another weak sanction which signals our weakness and our inability to move forward. If we continue in this stalemate for too long, Iran will be able to develop an even better nuclear program.

Do you think the US is stalemated with Iran? Should we pursue more direct action? Should we get aggressive with Iran?
