On Wednesday former US President Bush spoke and urged the international community to continue pressuring North Korea so that they will disarm and no longer be a threat. Bush specifically stated he believes “the best way to bring peace to the Korean peninsula is multilateral diplomacy through the six-party talks.” Bush advocated for the six nation talks which were abandoned by North Korea months ago.
I still can’t figure out why the US is so intent on the 6 nation discussions with North Korea. Perhaps the US wants partners on the deal so that if things go south, the US will not be the only nation to blame.
Speaking of the six party talks, Bush stated, “The president of North Korea will, no doubt, test the system, and, no doubt, try to find weaknesses.” As citizens who are outside of politics, we are not afforded the same information as politicians. However we can logically understand that there must be something very powerful about the six party discussions since North Korea refuses to resume said discussions. They say that they are open to negotiations but they want to speak with the US individually first. So what this tells me is that the six party discussions are necessary. If North Korea is so fearful of the power of the six party talks then that means that forum works and should be sought after. Whether or not it is possible to get North Korea back to those discussions is another story altogether. Hopefully we can think of some creative way to bring North Korea back to the table.
