The US stated that Iran’s plans to build another 10 uranium enrichment facilities are “unacceptable.” The UN ambassador Susan Rice stated that Obama’s approach to the issue is likely to switch from engagement to pressure. Ambassador Susan Rice stated, “We view the Iranian announcement, if it is in fact accurate and implemented that they intend to build 10 additional facilities, as completely inappropriate and further isolating Iran from the international community. We view that frankly as unacceptable.”
Is it time for the US to turn up the heat with Iran? Our sanctions have proved to do little more than aggravate Iran and create more ill will between Iran and the US. I’ve heard it said that we could be employing even more sanctions but what about the use of threats with this issue? Shouldn’t the US be pumping on the pressure with threats of force? After all, we are talking about a country which should not be and can’t be trusted with nuclear weapons. Ensuring that they do not develop an even greater nuclear program should be our number one priority.
For the past several months I have listened to the US discuss the situation in Iran. The method of choice is always sanctions although it has done little more than aggravate Iran. In my opinion we need to begin experimenting with other alternatives. One way or another we need to turn up the heat with Iran before things get even more complicated.
