China represents such a bittersweet relationship for me. I personally enjoy business and I recognize that China is where the future is economically. With such a large population and cheap labor force China represents a powerhouse for exports and domestic sales. This is something to get excited about as a business person. There has never before been such unparalleled opportunity in China. Neil Postman author of Technopoly, would argue that with every new innovation, cultural shift, or technological chance, something is sacrificed. Think of it this way: when factory workers began mass producing clothing, the quality was markedly decreased from the times of old when each piece of clothing was slowly hand crafted. Basically I am saying that quality was sacrificed for efficiency and low price. So with every cultural change, we should ask, what are we sacrificing? In the case of China we are bolstering our own economy through robust trade with China but we are also fortifying China as an economic center and military powerhouse. In the future this could come back to bite us in the butt. That’s why I think that diplomacy and careful consideration should be paramount in our relationship with China. We must always continually be asking what the ramifications of our relationship with China will look like. I am in no way saying that we should stop trading with China. That would be foolish. I am simply trying to illustrate that China could usurp the United States as the economic and military global powerhouse.
