The War of Independence

Written by Jonathan Formby

To continue with our previous discussion, I would like to begin by discussing the war of Independence, which dates from 1775-1782. It was this war that won America its independence as a nation. In 1775 George Washington was appointed as commander-in-chief of the American Army. This army continued to grow throughout the duration of the war as a result of local militias of towns and states joining the national Army that Washington commanded.
Interestingly, Washington lost more battles than he won. However he still managed to develop a winning formula to ward off the British. It is interesting to think about what would have happened if the United States had not come out victorious during the War of Independence. Would we have eventually attained freedom from Great Britain? Most likely not. Had we lost the war, Britain would have tightened their grasp on our great nation to the point that their commanders and armies would be stationed across the thirteen colonies allowing them to suppress any rebellion easily. Where would that leave us today? People do an awful lot of complaining about the United States but that comes with the territory of being the prominent world superpower. The reality is that if we had lost that war, someone else would have emerged as the superpower of today. How would they have handled the ability to produce and manufacture weapons of mass destruction? Would they utilize such weapons to attack the world? Or would they attempt to keep rogue nations in check and use their power for good as the United States has done? It is doubtful that there would have been a moderately noble nation such as the United States to emerge as the superpower. Historically, nations with power have been ruthless and dominative. The United States has done an excellent job of utilizing its power for good without trying to take over other nations.
It is truly amazing how great a fate that one war between the United States and Great Britain decided. Without a victory for the United States, who knows what condition the world would be in today.
