After four months of suspending Britain’s Iraq war inquiry to make way for the country’s general election, it began again on Tuesday. And this time, among those whom will appear before the panel in the coming weeks is the former UN inspector Hans Blix.
The last time a hearing was held was in March in which Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband appeared. Prime Minister Gordon Brown denied that there were cash curbs during his period as Chancellor of the Exchequer despite former Chief of the Defence Staff Lord Guthrie’s assertion that lives had been lost due to insufficient resources. Prime Minister Brown also said that military action in Iraq was “the right decision… for the right reasons.” yet he expressed his sadness for the loss of the British soldiers and Iraq citizens.
We expect more witnesses to appear before the panel in the coming weeks as the Chilcot inquiry have released the list of the new witnesses last June 10. One of them is the Swedish diplomat and former UN Inspector Hans Martin Blix.
Many look forward to see Dr. Blix to appear as this could be as controversial as Alastair Campbell’s appearance. He once told about his suspicions with his home and office being bugged by the United States, while he was leading the teams in search of Saddam Hussein’s supposed weapons of mass destruction. These suspicions were never directly proven, but evidence of bugging of UN security council representatives during the time the US was seeking approval from the council have been found.
Hopefully, Hans Blix statements would bring more light to what really happened and strengthen the case against Tony Blair and George Bush. How about you? Who among the new witnesses do you find interesting?
