A new Marine recruit receives many assingments. I have discovered that the writer of a Marine Corps blog can also get assignments. My first post brought a request for information as to why the Navy has oversight of the Marine Corps, even though the Corps is an independent military branch.
I have begun the research needed for completion of my “assignment.” I discovered that the Continental Congress acted on October 13, 1775 to request the outfitting of two warships, ships that could be used by those fighting for the Continental Congrss.
After the Revolutionary War, both the Navy and the Marine Corps temporarily ceased to exist. The Navy was resurrected on March 29, 1794, when Congrss authorized funding for Naval armament. Then on April 30, 1794, the Congress established the Department of the Navy.
I will continue to do research on this topic. I need to learn when the USMC was mede a part of the new United States of Averica. In the meantime, I must note that the author of my “assignment” has sent word about an unofficial reslationship between the Marines and the Navy.
The Navy appears well aware of the nature of Marine Corps training. One former Naval officer feels comfortable wearing a shirt that he got as a gift. Here is what is on that shirt:
