Yesterday, on the TV show “Good Morning America,” they showed one man who was reporting from York, Pennsylvania. He interviewed a few of the people who would be voting in the primary election on April 22nd.
In light of the current interest in Pennsylvania, I want to repeat some information that I mentioned in an earlier post. A number of the men in the 1942 Reserve Officers’ Class were from York County; at least one young man was from the City of York. Each of those men, like all residents of Pennsylvania, have a wonderful opportunity to discover a great deal about war strategy.
Both Valley Forge and Gettysburg battlefields are in Pennsylvania. The spot from which General George Washington began his crossing of the Delaware is in Pennsylvania. Not far from that crossing site, there is a hill, Bowman’s Hill, that was an important lookout site during the Revolutionary War.
A young boy or girl who is growing up in that part of the United States should be given every opportunity to visit one or more of those historic sites. In that way, they could learn at an early age an added something about war strategy. I believe I mentioned in an earlier post that the 1942 Reserve Officers’ Class had toured a Civil War battlefield in Virgina.
If any of my readers want to learn more about York, Pennsylvania, they might care to do so by searching for the article titled “A Key City in the Keystone State.” That article was written by the daughter of one of the men who was in the 1942 Reserve Officers’ Class at Quantico, Virginia.
Those who choose to read that article will find that history teaches us a good deal about the wisdom of generals. Sometimes that wisdom remains obscurred from the public eye. That was true more than 200 years ago; I suspect that it could well be equally true today.
