The Ethics of War

Written by Jonathan Formby

What do you define as an ethical reason for entering war? Should war be entered only at the last minute? Or is it something that must be accomplished in order to maintain political influence? When exactly is war acceptable and when should it be avoided?
I believe that most individuals would agree that war should be avoided if at all possible. If you can avoid going to war without sacrificing more than you might lose in battle, then it is logical to avoid entering. For instance, a country probably shouldn’t go to war to protect a trade agreement that is worth fifty million dollars. Why? Because a modern war against any formidable enemy will cost billions of dollars to accomplish. The United States has spent several billion dollars on this war and has lost many soldiers lives to this battle. Is it still worth it to continue? As I have stated before, no one person can say definitively whether the United States is justified in the war with Iraq. There are too many factors at play to make a simple statement such as, “it is the right thing” or “it is the wrong thing to do.” I believe people should not refrain from saying such things, as they represent their personal opinions. But I do believe that everyone in this country needs to be slightly more understanding and open minded about this war. It is impossible for the civilians of the United States to have all the information that the president and his cabinet had going into this war. They still maintain information to this day that is confidential. Perhaps some of this information would help explain the war in Iraq. It might even justify it to a greater extent. Bear in mind, that this is only a theory. If you have thoughts in favor or against such an idea, please let us know. I am only providing a logical explanation based on my knowledge of the matter. In any event, thank you for your comments, and thank you for reading.
