Iran’s nuclear program has been the subject of international interest for several years. United States officials have worried that nuclear facilities in Iran could only lead to the development of Nuclear weapons. However, Iran maintains that their nuclear facilities are only intended to help provide energy for a growing population. Who should we believe? The reality is that the only nation to utilize nuclear weapons to this day has been the United States. Does this mean that the United States as well as other nations should forget about patrolling nuclear development? Of course not. The reality is that without accountability, a nation such as Iran could quickly develop nuclear weapons programs.
Today, six world powers created an offer to propose to Iran over its nuclear program. The United States, Germany, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and China were among the nations meeting. No details have been made available to the public yet but British Foreign Secretary David Miliband was quoted saying, “I am glad to say that we have got agreement on an offer that will be made to the government of Iran”
Though we cannot know for sure, one can speculate that this offer entails the right for world powers to investigate the nuclear facilities Iran is operating. As stated earlier, the only way to avoid a nuclear catastrophe is to utilize checks and balances among the nations.
David Miliband was also quoted saying, “we very much hope that they will recognize the seriousness and the severity with which we have approached this issue and that they will respond in a timely manner to the suggestions we are making.”
