To continue with Friday’s discussion about Iran’s nuclear facilities, I thought I would start with some comments made by the Israeli President. Shimon Peres said that Iran acquiring nuclear weapons would be a “nightmare” for the entire world. He was clear to distinguish that Israel would not be the only target of Iran. He said, “Iran is a danger not only for Israel but also for the rest of the world.”
The Israeli President also publicly stated that Israel has no plans for launching an attack on the Iranian nuclear facilities in question. He said that there would be no need to attack Iran if the world community remains united.
Iran has been asked to suspend uranium enrichment by the United Nations. After continually refusing to do so, the UN has imposed three sanctions on Iran.
This is an issue that can be traced back thousands of years. Tensions in the Middle East have always run high. What should the United States role be in the Middle East? Should we attempt to mediate the struggles and disagreements between nations such as Israel and Iran? Obviously we will continue to do so because of our alliance with Israel and our dependence on foreign oil. We cannot afford to make an enemy out of either party.
For the time being, it seems as though the world will be keeping a close watch on Iran. If they were able to acquire nuclear weapons, the devastation would be catastrophic indeed.
