Captain Dayle Dye, a military historian, spent 21 years in the Marine Corps. He now gets paid for the advice he gives to the creators of the game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. That game is one of several in a World War II video game series.
Dye gives weapons training to the animators that he works with. Dye has them shoot ammunition into watermelons. The engineers catch the sound of the firing guns. Those recordings are then used in the game.
The man who directed the taping of the new game has said that Dye works very hard to get it right. According to that director, Dye has even called for the punishment of an employee who refered to a rifle as a “gun.”
Dye tries to make the enemy look tough. Those who want to study the toughness of the virtual enemy should set aside $60 for the Pacific Assault Director’s Edition. That game includes interviews with World War II veterans. One of the men interviewed, Roy Rausch, has this to say about Dye’s game:
“I don’t know how they could make this game any more real.”
