The Belated Recognition of an Anniversary

Written by Sue

Last month, April the 19 th fell on a Saturday. I failed to mention the important anniversary connected with that date. On April 19, 1983, a suicide bomber drove a truck full of explosives into the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. That act caused the death of 63 people.

One month later a similar incident occured ata Marine barracks in Lebanon. The U.S. Marines had come to Lebanon to help with a peace-keeping mission. Marines on duty in peacetime can face risks that are as great as the risks faced by Marines on the battlefield.

Today, unrest in Lebanon has again received mention in the news. Throughout the history of the United States, U.S. Marines have returned several times to certain regions of the world, regions where peace has seemed about to evaporate.

Tomorrow and Wednesday I am going to include in my blog more information about othe times when Marines have been on a peace keeping mission to some distant part of the world.
