Are you currently a Naval officer wondering what life holds in store for you after the Navy? If you are currently enlisted and are not planning to climb the Navy ranks and have a career in the Navy, it might be time to begin preparing for a citizen career. Like any career planning, you must first decide what you would like to do with your life. First and foremost, don’t let your plans after the Navy interfere with your current Naval work. If you are daydreaming about your new job or if you are engaged in preparations for your post Naval career, your Navy performance is bound to suffer. Regardless of whether you have figured out what you want to do after the Navy, be sure to try your hardest while you are still enlisted. If you always manage your best effort, you will come out with excellent references for your new job. Also, keep in mind that any promotions you receive while in the Navy will look excellent on a civilian resume as well.
If you know someone in the career path that you plan to enter, seek them out and pick their brain about how they started and their recommendations for someone entering the field. Keep in mind also that your career options will be limited if you are not a college graduate. If that is something that will hinder your plans, begin taking courses while you are still enrolled in the Navy. As a Navy officer, you will often be eligible for discounted courses. Also classes are sometimes available while on the ship. Classes are also conveniently available online at discounted rates to traditional schools.
Lastly, remember that you are working towards your dream career. If you get stressed and overwhelmed just remember that the more you put in now, the better career options you will have once you exit the Navy.
