John McCain called for sanctions on Iran if the country continues to pursue its nuclear program. McCain is calling for sanctions such as to deprive the nation of gasoline. McCain then went on to criticize his opponent Barack Obama who suggested that the United States have presidential-level talks with Tehran. He said, “We hear talk of a meeting with the Iranian leadership offered up as if it were some sudden inspiration, a bold new idea that somehow nobody has ever thought of before.” As a result of this, the Obama campaign immediately replied with cries that McCain is merely continuing on the ignorant Bush war path which has done nothing to secure the middle east.
In addition to serious sanctions on oil, McCain called for financial sanctions on the Bank of Iran. He said that rather than sitting down to discuss the issues, the United States needs to create real world pressures that will force Iran to cooperate. Is it wise to push a nation who is pursuing nuclear weapons? That is a difficult subject matter because the United States has always acted as the supreme council – The US has always demanded what it wants from foreign governments. However one could argue that McCain is correct to apply pressure to the nation because initiating a series of long talks with Iran might allow them to continue to develop weapons of mass destruction.
McCain concluded saying, “A severe limit on Iranian imports of gasoline would create immediate pressure on Khamenei and Ahmadinejad to change course and to cease in the pursuit of nuclear weapons.”
