To continue with recent discussion about Iran and the controversy concerning their nuclear program, I thought it would be appropriate to cover President Bush’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert this Wednesday. The purpose of this meeting was for the two allies to discuss the dangers and repercussions of a nuclear Iran. Olmert communicated that he has long foreseen the dangers of a nuclear Iran and the havoc that they would wreak on their enemy nations. Both parties theorize that Iran is using its civilian nuclear program as a front for nuclear weapons production. These issues are of chief importance to Israel because of the deep-seated historical conflicts between Israel and Palestine. Furthermore, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has openly called for the annihilation of the Jewish state on several occasions.
The meeting also discussed efforts to establish a Palestinian state. White House spokesperson Dana Perino said that creating a Palestinian state would be, “very, very difficult.” However she continued to assert that such a state would eventually be developed.
The night before his meeting with President Bush, Olmert urged the world to realize the seriousness of the situation and to warn Iran of the repercussions associated with their nuclear aspirations. He was quoted saying, “Israel will not tolerate the possibility of a nuclear Iran, and neither should any other country in the free world.”
Intelligence from Israel suggests that if Iran continues with their nuclear program, they could have an atomic bomb developed by 2010.
