Recently I discussed the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and his departure to Iran to offer the new incentive package for the dismemberment of Iranian nuclear facilities. While the nation of Iran has not officially responded to such a package, a prominent Iranian newspaper has rejected the package saying that the United States is illegally demanding things from Iran. The article continued on saying that the EU foreign policy chief was “threatening” the country. They were quoted saying that Solana did not come to negotiate but rather to threaten Iran.
The plan in question is in nothing more than a comprehensive agreement trying to persuade Iran to give up their nuclear arms program. However if Iran rejects this new plan and continues to pursue their program, you can be sure that the United States as well as the European Union will proceed to utilize more threatening means of persuasion. President Bush has already said that if diplomacy fails with Iran, he is prepared to utilize force.
The Iranian newspaper said that the demands of the EU foreign policy chief were “blackmail”. Another less radical newspaper in Iran agreed remarking, “the package of the 5+1 does not open the way to a solution as it is still asking for the suspension of enrichment.”
Obviously the United States and EU will continue to ask for the suspension of Uranium Enrichment because without doing so, Iran would be able to build weapons of mass destruction.
