Becoming an Air Force Pilot

Written by Jonathan Formby

Recently we discussed how to become a United States Navy Pilot. Therefore, I thought it would be appropriate to detail the road leading to an Air Force Pilot career. Initially, most people are drawn to the air force because of the urge to fly their state of the art jets. Like any path in the United States military, there is strict criterion that you must adhere to if you wish to become an Untied States Air Force pilot.
First and foremost, you should determine whether the Air Force is the right place for you. Being in this Air Force blog is an excellent place to start. You will get to read articles and comments made about and by those enrolled in the US Air Force. However do not stop there, any literature you can read about the Air Force will help broaden your understanding of what a career with the Air Force will look like. If you decide the Air Force is right for you, apply to the officer program you would like to be accepted to. These include: Air Force ROTC, Air Force Academy, and Air Force Basic Officer Training. In order to be an Air Force pilot, you must be a college graduate. Therefore, you should carefully choose your college major so that it relates to your career in the military and the career you might choose to pursue after the Air Force.
Once you complete your officer training you will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Once you have done so, request to become an Air Force Pilot. However by this time you might be interested in a different career in the Air Force. Most of those who serve in the Air Force are not flying jets. Also, there will be other requirements that you must meet in order to become a pilot.
If you still want to pursue your career as a pilot, attend undergraduate pilot training. You will then be able to choose what you will fly based on how well you do and your supervisors opinions of you.
