It seems to me that the US Marines get less publicity than the other branches of military service. In my experience, I have heard less on the news about marines and seen less movies portraying marine life than the other Military offices. For those of you who do not serve in the United States Military, I thought it might be interesting if I run through a brief history and mission statement for the US Marines.
The Marines were established as the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. Originally they were established as a Naval infantry. However over time their mission and purpose has transformed. Officially, the Marines are within the department of the Navy. In spite of this the Marines function vary much as a separate entity. Often times the marines work in conjunction with the US navy. They operate together for logistical and transportation services.
The Marines began to be acknowledged for their incredible ability to conduct amphibious warfare in the 20th century. Their amphibious warfare techniques proved vary beneficial during World War II. Interestingly, the marines have served in every United States war and conflict since their development in 1775.
Marines are quite important to American Foreign policy because they are capable and equipped to deploy immediately to foreign lands to accomplish any task necessary.
The United States Marines have three official goals that are part of their mission. They are: to seize or defend naval bases/land operations that benefit naval endeavors, to develop means to perform amphibious landings throughout the world, and lastly to do whatever is called of them by the President of the United States.
