A new distance record was recently set for the Lockheed Martin Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System. The Rocket hit a target that was 85 Kilometers away with perfect accuracy. This is a great improvement from the previous peak performance distance of 70 Kilometers. Scott Arnold said, “Additional range for GMLRS represents greater safety for Soldiers.” Besides greater safety for soldiers the GMLRS are incredibly accurate which allows for decreased collateral damage. Decreasing civilian casualties is always a priority when developing new military technologies. It is a doubly successful venture here because this new technology affords greater protection to soldiers and civilians alike. It is safer for soldiers to operate because the extra fifteen kilometers that the new GMLRS is capable of traveling is an extra fifteen kilometers that the soldiers can stay away from enemy terrain with. The GMLRS team was awarded the William J. Perry award for precision strike in 2007. This award was given before the new improvements in the technology allowing greater distance and functionality of the weapon.
For those of you reading this blog, how do you feel about the contractors of this weapon, Lockheed Martin? Do you believe that they are beneficial to the United States Military? I have heard mixed reviews on such issues. Some people believe that military weapons manufacturing should not be privatized. What are your thoughts on the issue? As always, thank you for your interest and input.
