Iran is pleased that the United States will be present at their meeting to discuss nuclear activity this weekend. Iran has said that the weekend discussions are supposed to help diffuse the tension between Iran and the global community. Iran also stated that they hope to have positive developments this weekend. Iran Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that the American presence in Geneva for the meeting would, “help the United States be informed directly.”
From these comments I can’t help but wonder whether Iran is actually going to give up their nuclear program. They have openly stated that they want an amicable solution to this problem. However I wonder if when the meeting begins, the Iranian representatives will simply try to defend their purpose in creating nuclear facilities as they have in the past. Thus far negotiations about the nuclear facilities in Iran have been little more than Iran repeatedly stating that they deserve these facilities, that the facilities are for nuclear fuel, and that no one can make them give the facilities up. Could there be a change in the hearts of Iranian leaders? Only time will tell what comes about this weekend. What are your predictions for the meeting this weekend? Do you believe there is a chance that Iran will abandon its program and embrace the aid packages it has been offered? Or is such thinking only a naive fantasy at this point? Indeed time will tell.
