It appears that the United States and Poland are finally making headway in their agreement about a missile shield that would be based in Poland. The Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said after his meeting with the US Assistant Secretary of State that the meeting was a success while stating that both Poland and the US have come to a closer agreement about the missile shield. In the past, Poland has been weary of the agreement about the missile shield because they wanted assurance of extra security from the United States. Thus far the project for a missile shield in Poland has been strongly supported by NATO but has had slight opposition from Poland and Russia. With Poland coming around, it appears that only Russia now needs to be won over.
Can you see Russia coming to an agreement with the US about the missile shield? Do you think that they will be comfortable with a US military presence so close to their borders? In my mind the US will have to be diplomatic with their dealings with Russia. I assume that they will inevitably offer them some sort of economic benefit package or give them privileges with trade, which would cause the nation to come around. Do you know of anything in particular that might win Russia over? Perhaps they can’t be won over. One thing is for sure; the new US missile shield is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Getting the go ahead from Poland was the most important step because the shield will be housed on Polish soil.
