Prompt Global Strike Initiative

Written by Jonathan Formby

US leaders in Washington are currently in the process of implementing the Prompt Global Strike initiative. This initiative is a plan that would allow the United States to utilize long-range ballistic missiles to hit any target in the world within 60 minutes. A reusable orbiter would potentially launch non-nuclear missiles distances greater than 6000 miles. An army panel approved a plan to convert submarine ballistic missiles into non-nuclear warheads that could be utilized for the Prompt Global Strike Initiative.
Now that I have laid some of the groundwork for this initiative, let me tell you what I think. Honestly, this plan scares me a little bit. Is it really advantageous for any nation to be able to hit another country within sixty minutes anywhere around the globe? I am all for advancing our military and aerospace program but where do we draw the line? Just because we are capable of producing such weapons does that mean that we have a responsibility to do so? Honestly this technology makes me weary because if the US can orchestrate such a thing, then China and other nations will not be far behind.
What do you think about such a program? Is it a welcome improvement for the United States or is it something that we should remain cautious about? If we don’t create the technology, will someone else beat us to the punch?
