History of Iran Controversy 2003-2004

Written by Jonathan Formby

By 2003 Iran was still insisting that their program was for legitimate energy purposes. At this time the IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei went to Iran with an inspection team to inspect the facilities. The UN report detailed findings of traces of Uranium at the Iranian nuclear facilities. The international community began to demand that Iran relinquish their program. Realizing that their hand was indeed caught in the cookie jar, Iran signed an extension of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which allowed the EU to make tougher more random inspections of Iran.
By 2004 Iran began to fudge on their word and was not cooperating with EU inspections teams. I can remember news headlines saying things like “Iran dodges nuclear inspectors.” By that time I had heard enough about Iran so I was beginning to worry less about their program. Later that year Iran yet again agrees to suspend Uranium enrichment while international discussions are under way about their program. I find this Ironic because as you will see after reading through the entire history of the Iran nuclear conflict, Iran continually has promised to discontinue Uranium Enrichment. Then when the global community backs down they continue again right away.
