History of Iran Controversy 2005-2006

Written by Jonathan Formby

In August of 2005 Iran received a new president by the name of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Under his leadership, Iran continues its Uranium enrichment practices while the UN backs off for the time being. A month later the IAEA finds out that Iran has yet again fallen into violation.
By 2006 Iran began to break the barriers which the IAEA had placed at their Natanz nuclear research facility. Once the preventitive barriers were broken Iran continued its Uranium Enrichment there. Once the global community found out about this, sanctions were officially threatened towards Iran unless they discontinued their work with nuclear materials.
As you will see as I continue on with the history of this conflict, Iran has abused the trust and leeway of the US and the UN time and time again.
Later in 2006 the conflict gets a little messier as the UN votes to impose the suggested sanctions on Iran. The vote passed and Iran publicly stated that they were not going to stop uranium enrichment because of the sanctions. The sanctions were on the Iranian trade of nuclear materials and technology. Honestly I don’t know why these sanctions weren’t placed on Iran after the first time they lied and went back to uranium enrichment. Do you believe that it was an intelligent move to wait to place these sanctions on Iran? Hindsight is always twenty-twenty but I still cant help but wonder why the UN would not have acted sooner with sanctions cutting down the ability for Iran to gather sensitive nuclear materials.
