Libya is now showing interest in building a nuclear power station utilizing materials from Russia. The power station will serve to generate electricity for the nation. In the same deal, Libya will also be buying over 2 billion dollars worth of missiles and other weapons from the Russian defense ministry.
What is your reaction to this new deal? I must admit that I am weary whenever any nation wants to build nuclear power plants because those facilities can so easily be utilized for the production of nuclear weapons. Could this deal be in an effort to get nuclear weapons for Libya? Perhaps I am reading too far into this deal. It is entirely likely that the weapons deal between Russia and Libya is separate from the nuclear power plant deal.
The Libyan prime minister commented on the meeting stating, “We reached agreement on concrete steps that will enable strengthening of the Libyan armed forces thanks to bilateral cooperation.”
The weapons that Libya will be purchasing consist of surface-to-air missiles, helicopters, tanks, and fighter jets. Should we be weary of weapons deals between Russia and other nations?
I would like to know what the readers of this blog feel about nuclear power plants in general. Should they be a cause for concern? Should we allow some nations to have nuclear power plants while outlawing them in nations like Iran? How can we determine who is simply harnessing energy and who is developing deadly weapons?
