The Defense Department has decided to ban any ground level assessments from people that work on mapping the surface of the earth. This was after at least one base was mapped, allowing full Internet access to it online. This seems like a no brainer, but its hard to stay ahead of the technology. We do not have to really think about it too much, we dont want to compromise the security of our Armed servicemembers just so people can look at the earth from online.
I enjoy using the Internet as much as anyone, but I am pleased that there are folks out there working to try and keep it safe. I am against censorship as much as the next guy, but some information has no need to be in the public venue, and I am glad to see the Defense Department take this action. They sent around word to not allow mapping crews on to United States and Defense Department facilities.
I am glad that someone figured it out before any other military facilities were mapped at ground level. Why would anyone allow people to come map at all? In the time of September 11, and with the current state of alert worldwide, I am a bit dismayed that we are not more aware. But then I start to think about it, who would have thought the ability and the technology that we have currently would exist?
At least we are dealing with it on an increasing basis. People are out there that want to cause us harm, and they have folks out there that sit around trying to devise new ways of attack. I was pleased to see the action of the Defense Department, it makes sense to keep the precise street by street information and maps of our military bases private.
