The Nuclear Trade Embargo over India has been lifted after 34 years. The foreign spokesperson for China said that they have always maintained a position that every nation deserves to have nuclear energy. I must admit that I believe those words to be foolish. Lets look at this objectively. Why must every nation have nuclear energy? Do the comments made by China indicate that they would allow unstable nations such as Iran and North Korea to have nuclear facilities? Surely they can’t honestly believe that to be in the best interests of the global community. If Iran or North Korea had unchecked access to nuclear facilities it would only be a matter of time before something went amiss.
In 1974 India tested a nuclear weapon. Their testing of that weapon is what got them an embargo where they were not allowed to purchase materials for a nuclear facility. Do you believe that such measures are fair? In my opinion it was wise to blacklist India so that they couldn’t attain nuclear weapons. If you cut a nation off before they accumulate weapons, then that is one less threat to monitor. Either way the fact of the matter is that India will now have nuclear facilities for nuclear energy. This is good and bad. It will allow for less oil dependency but it will necessitate more rigorous international police activity whereby nations will need to be checking up on India to ensure legitimate uses of their nuclear materials.
