US to Investigate India Nuclear Deal

Written by Jonathan Formby

There seems to be a recurring theme for nuclear facilities in nations outside the United States. If a nation wished to have a nuclear facility, they must agree to frequent random UN inspections to ensure that nothing is amiss. The Nuclear deal signed by Bush and the President of India in 2005 is no different. We agreed to allow India to purchase cheap materials for their nuclear power plant in exchange for an agreement that they would welcome UN inspections into their facilities.
China, New Zealand, and some other countries have been reserved about allowing India access to materials to build a nuclear plant. They have been blacklisted for some thirty years. There is hesitation about allowing India to build because they are not a member of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
President Bush is scheduled to meet with the President of India later this month. Dana Perino, Whitehouse spokesperson said, that the meeting will, “strengthen the strategic partnership and build upon our progress in other areas of cooperation, such as agriculture, education, trade, and defense”
Though the nuclear deal with India was signed by Bush in 2005, it has never yet been finalized. Congress will soon vote to determine whether or not the United States will help India build nuclear facilities.
What do you make of this nuclear situation? Is there any evidence to suggest that we should be reserved about allowing India to have a nuclear plant?
