North Korea’s Nuclear Plan

Written by Jonathan Formby
North Korea has “no immediate potential” to start their nuclear reactor in Yongbyon. If North Korea does reactivate their nuclear reactor, it is possible that they could utilize plutonium for warfare against several nations. The United States and North Korea are still in the midst of negotiations about North Korea’s nuclear facilities and whether or not they will shut them down for good. North Korea has repeatedly offered resistance because they feel that they are being “violated” by the United States insistence for random nuclear checks. North Korea tested an atomic weapon in 2006 which has not done much to secure trust from the international community. North Korea started to disable their nuclear plants after a pact was made with the United States, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. The reason that North Korea stopped work with the disablement of their nuclear facilities is because Washington would not remove them from an international blacklist. The blacklist is a list of countries who cannot receive aid from the United States. The White house has admittedly agreed that the steps they wish to take to verify that North Korea’s nuclear plants are disabled could be seen as intrusive. However there is really no other option because we can’t offer aid to North Korea and we can’t let down our guard unless they agree on stringent verification that their plants are disarmed.
Do you see any other way that we can reach amends with North Korea? In my mind we can only stand our ground and wait for them to accept our terms.
