Obama Elected President

Written by Jonathan Formby

With Obama being elected for president, some things are sure to change with Iraq. Right? According to US and Iraqi officials, the plans for Iraq will not be affected by the president elect. Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari is intent on finishing the agreement that was reached during the current administration. I for one agree that the best course of action would be to honor the current presidents plans and to continue on with agreements reached with Iraqi officials. Hoshyar Zebar said, “The president-elect and his team are fully aware of the status of our talks and discussions. And they understand the rationale of concluding the agreement.” The newest draft of the Status of Forces agreement says that US troops will begin to withdraw from Iraqi cities by June of 2009. They will continue to pull of of the cities with all troops being brought home by 2011.
I can’t understand why Obama would honor the current pact. By my understanding, he believes this war is a sham and that it should not have been entered into in the first place. I think that he will get the troops out as fast as is possible. I don’t think he will have any objection to this because congress is now a majority of democrats. The Dems have been petitioning for a withdrawal from Iraq for several months now. I fear that that time is startlingly close with the new president elect.
